What’s WindowsCopilotRuntime.exe? Is it safe or a virus?

The WindowsCopilotRuntime.exe is a new AI tool made by Microsoft, and built into Windows itself.

Microsoft writes that "New for Windows 11, Copilot in Windows is an AI-powered intelligent assistant that helps you get answers and inspirations from across the web, supports creativity and collaboration, and helps you focus on the task at hand. Copilot in Windows helps you stay focused while it performs the tasks you need to get done. From adjusting your PC’s settings to organizing your windows with Snap Assist, Copilot saves you time and helps you be more efficient."

Now, instead of being limited to Edge, Microsoft's Copilot AI helper tool is now part of the Windows OS.

If you're not a fan of an AI Copilot working with you, and potentially sharing private data with Microsoft, then it's possible to disable this optional tool. To disable the Windows Copilot, start by clicking the Windows/Start button. Then, type "Settings" and open it. Navigate to Personalization, select Taskbar, and toggle off the Copilot.

The publisher of an executable is the entity responsible for its distribution and authenticity. Most processes/executables on your PC should be signed.
