What’s SearchIndexer.exe (Microsoft Windows Search Indexer)? Is it safe or a virus?

You may have noticed lately in Windows that the Taskbar search box gets results almost instantly! The Windows process that's responsible for that speed is SearchIndexer.exe, also known as Microsoft Windows Search Indexer.

At our SpyShelter labs here in Austin, Texas, we found that all our PCs had this important executable. It appears to not only be safe, but it's important to leave it running if you want to quickly find apps or files on your PC.

The SearchIndexer.exe process continuously updates the PC search index to include new files and changes to existing files, ensuring that the search feature remains super duper quick!

What does it mean if someone is the publisher of a PC .exe (executable or process)?

The publisher of an executable is the entity responsible for its distribution and authenticity. Most processes/executables on your PC should be signed. The signature on the executable should have been verified through a third party whose job it is to make sure the entity is who it says it is. Find an unsigned executable? You should consider scanning any completely unsigned .exe on your PC.
